Andrei Marchis

PhD student, University of Cambridge

Laurentiu Marchis is a masters student at the University of Cambridge focusing broadly on statistical learning theory and applications. He is currently doing a project in robust gradient descent for various statistical models under the supervision of Prof. Po-Ling Loh. Specifically he is looking at how one can use robust estimators for the population level gradients of a given loss function satisfying certain smootness and convexity conditions. His background is mostly in pure mathematics and he made a switch to statistics in his second year at Imperial College London. At Cambridge he is deepening his understanding of statistical theory and methodologies through courses like Robust Statistics, Information Theory, Modern Statistical Methods or Concentration Inequalities. In his free time he enjoys playing table tennis, watching movie or going out with his friends.
